The statue of liberty was gifted to the United States by the people of France on July 4th, 1886.

What did the US give France for the Statue of Liberty?

The French History of the Statue of Liberty is a long and complicated one. The statue was originally commissioned by French politician Édouard de Laboulaye as a gift to the United States. The French would produce the statue and the Americans would provide the pedestal on which it would stand. Laboulaye enlisted the help of a sculptor friend named Auguste Bartholdi.

Bartholdi was tasked with creating a design for the statue. He eventually settled on a design that featured a robed woman holding a torch in her right hand and a tabula ansata in her left. The statue was meant to represent the concept of liberty and was inspired by the Roman goddess Libertas.
