What happened to the Statue of Liberty over time?

The statue of Liberty is one of the most iconic symbols of America. For over a hundred years, it has stood as a sentinel for liberty and justice. But over the years, the statue’s copper-color has shifted to green as the metal oxidized. And the American interpretation of the colossus has also transformed into how it is seen today.

The torch has been closed since the “Black Tom” explosion of July 30, 1916, which was one of the largest acts of sabotage to our nation prior to the event of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The explosion occurred at the Black Tom Island pier in Jersey City, New Jersey and was large enough to be heard and felt as far away as Philadelphia. The explosion not only caused significant damage to the pier, but also set fire to a nearby ammunition factory. The fire from the factory spread to a nearby railway depot, which caused even more damage. In all, the explosion and resulting fires caused an estimated $20 million in damage (equivalent to over $400 million today) and resulted in the deaths of at least 7 people.
