Who built the Statue of Liberty and why?

The monument would honor the United States’ centennial of independence and the friendship with France. French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi supported de Laboulaye’s idea and in 1870 began designing the statue of “Liberty Enlightening the World.” The statue was completed in 1884 and was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States.

The Statue of Liberty is an image of a woman. Classical images of Liberty have usually been represented by a woman. The Statue of Liberty’s face is said to be modeled after the sculptor’s mother.
