Michelangelo may have been the most famous sculptor of his time, but it was Frederic Auguste Bartholdi who was responsible for the Statue of Liberty. Bartholdi was born in Colmar, Alsace, in 1834. When Alsace was annexed by Germany in 1870, Bartholdi moved to Paris. There, he associated with a group of intellectuals who were opposed to the regime of Napoleon III. Bartholdi became friends with Édouard René de Laboulaye, a French abolitionist and supporter of the Union cause in the American Civil War. It was through Laboulaye that Bartholdi learned of the effort to build a pedestal for the Statue of Liberty.<\/p>\n
